When introducing  a new style of litter to your cat, to help them accept it mix the new and old litters together and then gradually remove the old litter and add more of the new litter. This way your cat will accept it more readily. But some cats do not like change, so be aware that they may prefer the old litter although you like the new! Guess who will win that battle?

The many different types of litter you can use all have their purposes. These are the  most common types  you can use.
  •  The Grey Clay type. I have used this cat litter. Although it kept the smell of urine at bay I did find it heavy when wet and also it clumped together. Which made the cleaning out more of a chore.
  • Wood pellets. These I have used the most recently. I found it quite easy to pick out the offending areas, and the wood just turned to sawdust when wet, but it stayed fluffy. Which made it easier to manage. It also had a very pleasant odour. I would recommend this product.
  • Paper based pellets. I haven't used this product yet, but having read a few reviews they are quite mixed, some owners liked the product some didn't, but it also depends on what brands you use as well.
Make sure you clean the tray out at least once a week with mild detergent or if they miss the tray you will need to clean it up immediately! Do not use ammonia as cats detest the smell and any trace in their tray will stop them from using it.

Our cats normally stopped using the tray when they are about 9 months old and going outside regularly. But of course if you have a house cat you  will be using litter all the time.
