Horses Teeth
Teeth
Defects in a horse's teeth can result in a loss of the horses condition as well as causing discomfort and pain. The most causes are wolf teeth, sharp edges and just like babies they suffer with teething
Teething
When horses are teething their mouth can be sore, so any work with a bit should be curtailed. The problem usually sorts itself out once the horse reaches the age of 5 years, teething is then completed.
Wolf Teeth
These are the small teeth, they vary in shape and generally appear next to and in front of the first molar, this is a maximum of one on each of their jaws. They can cause discomfort when they are forming, they can be removed if they prevent the bit from lying comfortable in their mouths.
Sharp Edges
Your Horse's teeth will continue to grow after maturity. This balances the hard wear incurred when food, particularly hay and coarse grass, is chewed, you could sometimes get uneven wear on the teeth. Because the grinding process which is carried out by the molar (back) teeth often causes sharp edges to develop. These occur on the outside edges of the teeth of the upper jaw and the inside edges of those on the lower jaw. This can cause a problem with their cheeks and tongue, and can even cause ulcers, This will be painful to your horse and the reluctance to eat will mean a loss of condition to your horse.
Symptoms
- Partially chewed food falling from the mouth when they are eating
- Reluctance to be stroked around the sensitive areas, where the sharp edges are
- Discomfort when a nose band is fitted
- Resistance to the bit
- Loss of condition
Treatment
All horse should have a regular check up with the
Horse Dentist or Vet, just like humans do with our own Dentists!
Wolf teeth should be identified and removed if they are causing a problem. The Dentist or Vet might suggest rasping, (a large file) this will smooth out the rough areas and make it more comfortable for your horse.
It is always a good idea to check the teeth for sharp edges, this might
help identify a lot of problems which can be easily put right.
